Hat Care

Caring for Your Custom Patch Hat

Here’s how to keep your custom patch hat looking its best. You can follow the basic steps below, or for optimal care and longevity, consider using our Crazy Kat Outfitters Hat Cleaning Kit, specifically designed for your hat’s materials.

Basic Cleaning (Without Crazy Kat Outfitters Hat Cleaning Kit)

1. Remove Loose Debris

Use a soft-bristled brush (like a clothes brush or a very soft toothbrush) to gently brush away any loose dirt or dust from the hat and the patch (whether leatherette or embroidered). Brush in the direction of the hat’s fabric weave and, for embroidered patches, in the direction of the thread. For leatherette, brush gently with the grain.

2. Wipe Light Dirt

Take a clean, light-colored microfiber cloth and dampen it with cool water. Gently wipe the affected areas of the hat and the patch. Use small, circular motions and avoid over-wetting. Be extra gentle around the edges of heat-pressed embroidered patches.

3. Address Light Stains

For slightly more stubborn marks, you can try a tiny amount of very mild dish soap on a damp cloth. Gently dab the stain on the hat fabric and around the patch. For embroidered patches, dab gently on the embroidery as well. Wipe all areas with a clean, water-dampened cloth to remove any soap residue. Avoid direct, harsh rubbing on heat-pressed embroidered patches. For leatherette, treat as described previously.

4. Tackle Sweat Stains

For sweat stains (usually on the inner band), gently dab the area with a slightly damp cloth. For more persistent sweat, a very diluted solution of mild soap can be used sparingly on the hat’s inner band, followed by a clean water rinse with a damp cloth. Avoid getting excessive moisture on heat-pressed embroidered patches.

5. Air Dry

Always allow your hat to air dry completely in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight or heat.

Using the Crazy Kat Outfitters Hat Cleaning Kit:

1. Brush Away Loose Dirt

Use the specialized brush from your Crazy Kat Outfitters Hat Cleaning Kit on the hat and the patch.

2. Treat Stains with Our Solution

For dirt and light stains on the hat fabric and around all types of patches, apply a small amount of the cleaning solution from your kit to the provided microfiber cloth and gently dab the affected area. For directly embroidered patches, you can gently dab the embroidery as well. Wipe clean with a separate damp cloth if needed. Use extra care around the edges of heat-pressed embroidered patches. For leatherette patches, treat as directed previously.

3. Target Sweat Stains

Apply the sweat stain remover from your kit directly to the sweat-stained area (usually the inner band), following the kit’s instructions.

4. Rinse (If Necessary)

If instructed by the kit, gently rinse any treated areas with a clean, damp cloth. Avoid saturating heat-pressed embroidered patches.

5. Air Dry

Allow your hat to air dry completely.

Protect Your Hat with Waterproofing (Optional)

To help protect your hat from water and future stains, consider using a quality waterproofing solution. Follow the product instructions carefully and ensure your hat is clean and dry before application. When applying to hats with embroidered patches, avoid saturating the embroidery directly unless the waterproofing product specifies it’s safe. For leatherette patches, test in an inconspicuous area first.

Important Considerations for All Patch Types:

  • Avoid harsh chemicals or excessive scrubbing on any type of patch.
  • When cleaning heat-pressed embroidered patches, be particularly gentle around the edges to prevent lifting.
  • Test any cleaning solution in a small, inconspicuous area of the hat fabric first. For leatherette patches, test on a hidden area of the patch.
